Lessons Embedded in the Heart (Episode 3)

 Lessons Embedded in the Heart

Episode 3

The way you treat those around you carves your memory into their hearts. Both joyful and painful memories become etched within.

Memories often transition, leading individuals to replicate their own experiences with others.

I recall a time during my childhood. My late father would keep us away from a family in our village, especially during visits to our rural home at "Ubi-Ogwuma Farm Land". I was always curious about his reasons.

One afternoon, whilst my parents were busy with farm work, I and my siblings were home. Neighborhood children came by, and one mentioned a place where mangoes could be found.

To our surprise, that location was the very place we were forbidden to approach. Despite this, it seemed untouched, as evidenced by the numerous fruits on the ground. So, we gathered some mangoes and left.

On our way back, we encountered my father. He inquired about our whereabouts upon seeing the mangoes in our possession.

I honestly explained everything. Though he was upset, he insisted we return the mangoes to where we found them. Despite his anger, I couldn’t understand why he held such disdain towards that family, especially in their absence.

Subsequently, my father disclosed the cause of his animosity towards them.

He described his past as a prosperous businessman, dealing in groundnuts in the North and palm oil in the East. His recounting was filled with nostalgia.

Curiosity arose as to why he ceased this lucrative trade, recalling how it once brought joy and snacks to my peers and me.

My father elaborated on a specific incident involving a canoe belonging to that family, which marked the beginning of his troubles.

Eager for details, I pressed on.

He recounted how accusations against him of using the canoe for nefarious purposes led to a major financial downfall, as he struggled to clear his name through expensive traditional oaths.

We were left speechless by his story. It revealed the profound impact of the incident on his life and the lasting bitterness it wrought, despite his initial reluctance to share this with us.

This unfortunate tale from my father's life has imprinted a significant lesson upon me, motivating me to document it.

Indeed, many memories shape and serve as our legacy.

Endure Hard Time Episode 2

Endure Hard Time

Episode 2

Daily Life Experience

When life is going well, it's wise to save for the tougher times that lie ahead.

Life is ruled by time and seasons. Engage in activities you can manage and trust the Divine with the rest.

Despite the smiles we wear, there comes a time in everyone's life when smiles give way to tears or silent weeping.

Everything seemed to be going according to plan, with a bright future on the horizon, then unexpectedly, a challenge appeared and the joy was gone.

It was through these experiences that the true meaning of endurance, as described in the Holy Scriptures, became clearer to me. Those going through tough times should strive to persevere with patience.

If you can appreciate the good times, then enduring the hard times is a part of life's principles.

The experiences shared in my previous episode, titled "Desperate Woman," taught me invaluable lessons.

Trust your instincts without doubt, for it is nature's way of communicating impending events. Deciphering these signs, however, requires deep insight and interpretation.

Have there been moments when you regretted not heeding your mind's guidance, or felt a sense of satisfaction for trusting it? This is common in our journey through life.

Desperate Woman

 Desperate Woman

Daily life experience Episode 1

As I settled in, pondering the theme for my new episode, an incident unfolded.

A woman entered my office, seeking assistance to type her documents. Although one of my employees was already helping her, the woman was insistent, urging the employee to hurry. Subsequently, she requested to have her phone charged, a service we could not provide since the employee was using a laptop for the typing task.

"Won't you turn on the generator?" she inquired.

"Even if I were to start the generator, it wouldn't be to charge phones, given the high cost of fuel," I responded.

Persistently, she inquired, "Where can I charge my phone?" pressuring the employee assisting her.

With no alternative, the employee paused her typing task to lead the woman to a charging station where she could pay for the service. Throughout, the woman's desperation was palpable, both for charging her phone and having her documents typed promptly.

Motivated by her urgency, I abandoned my planned episode to focus on typing the documents, completing them swiftly. However, just as I was about to print the documents, my solar inverter malfunctioned.

The unexpected breakdown left me speechless, yet I had no choice but to attempt a repair, holding onto hope. Just then, the woman returned from charging her phone.

"Are my documents ready?" she queried.

"I'm sorry, we cannot complete your job at this moment," I informed her.

Her frustration grew, "So, you're refusing to complete my work after I've waited?"

"As you can see, my inverter has just broken down, and I'm trying to resolve it. I can't promise the completion of your job," I explained.

Her rants escalated, blaming us for the mishap. Eventually, I retorted that it was sheer bad luck that led to the inverter's damage. She stormed off in dismay, exclaiming, "Oh my God, oh my God."

Indeed, some days start with joy but end in despair.

This ordeal of desperation not only interrupted my work but also led to a predicament with my solar inverter, the cost of which I'm yet to determine how to cover.

Campus Riot

Campus Riot

(The story of Obim part 20)

In the early morning, as we were heading to our lectures, we received news about a protest happening on campus due to an increase in tuition fees.

The demonstration initially felt like a spirited display of dissent against the hike in tuition fees, with students vocally chanting, "we will not agree, we will not agree" in unison.

From a distance, Obim observed the unfolding scene.

What began as a peaceful protest quickly escalated when some boys set the school's security house ablaze.

Moving towards the administrative offices, they tore down anything in their path.

Amongst them, certain individuals with criminal intent broke into offices to steal valuable items such as laptops and printers.

The school management was alerted to the fact that the protest had devolved into an excuse for stealing school property.

Individuals harboring malicious intent, armed with weapons, then proceeded towards the bank located within the school premises.

As Obim attempted to capture the events on video, he was accosted by the aggressors who nearly destroyed his smartphone. He was coerced into deleting nearly all its contents, ensuring no footage remained.

The sudden intervention of the army turned the school premises into a battleground, prompting students, including Obim, to flee for their lives.

Campus Life

The story of Obim part 19

During one of Melosky's computer sessions, a fellow lodge resident approached him while Obim observed from behind. She inquired if she could use his computer for an assignment. Inexplicably, Melosky proclaimed ownership of the computer right in front of Obim, disregarding politeness and the truth.

Obim quietly resolved not to hold a grudge against either party. Instead, he made a firm decision to pursue computer training to utilize his computer effectively.

His dedication to learning about computers ran parallel to his academic lectures. This endeavor marked a significant turning point in Obim's life, enhancing his knowledge considerably. Within just three months, Obim had surpassed many of his peers in computer proficiency, fueled by his passion for technology which aided in his studies and research.

Upon returning from lectures, Obim would sometimes find himself locked out, waiting for his roommate to finish with his female visitor.

Obim's discomfort grew with his roommate's habits, who often returned with friends and consumed food without saving any for him.

The irony of having a roommate who claimed to be penniless yet frequently purchased new clothes did not escape Obim, who found himself using his funds to provide for both of their meals.

While his roommate never brought home groceries, Obim consistently contributed foodstuffs from visits to his parents' farm, ensuring they both had provisions.

Over time, Obim observed his roommate's preference for accepting money, feigning that his parents had provided nothing.

It was common for students to request food from others under pretenses, such as having soup but no garri, only to seek additional provisions elsewhere.

Visits between students often had the ulterior motive of sharing a meal, with guests hinting at their hunger by asking if the host had prepared any food.

UNDERSTANDING COMPUTER BASICS

UNDERSTANDING COMPUTER BASICS

(The story of Obim part 18)

During his first year of tertiary education, Obim enrolled in a Computer course after discovering a fraudster who claimed to have made some payments on his behalf was actually depositing the money into his own account, not the school's.

With his limited savings, Obim purchased his first computer system. His educational journey from primary through secondary school had not afforded him any knowledge of computers, including the various components and their names.

At Tetlow Owerri, when Obim inquired about the cost of a computer, he was relieved to find the price was within his budget.

Pointing at the monitor, Obim asked, "How much is this?"

"5,000 naira," the seller responded. "Please, there's an accessory that connects with it, but I'm not sure of its name."

"Is it a UPS?" the seller suggested. "Yes," Obim confirmed.

At that moment, Obim was unaware of what UPS stood for.

The seller provided Obim with a monitor, a UPS, and a power cable. After paying, Obim returned to his lodging. Upon seeing the purchase, Melosky, his roommate, was elated until he questioned, "But where is the CPU?"

It was then that Obim realized his mistake, having bought a UPS instead of a CPU due to his lack of computer knowledge. To cover up, Obim hastily claimed he didn’t have enough money for the CPU.

Inwardly, Obim admitted the excuse was just to mask his ignorance. Subsequently, he visited Royal Computer's shop at Tetlow Owerri to purchase a System Unit. The shop had recently opened, as the owner informed Obim, who also guided Obim on additional accessories he might need, realizing Obim's limited knowledge of computers.

Obim acquired a System Unit, printer, software, VGA cable, power cable, mouse, keyboard, and more.

Thanks to his practical knowledge in Electrical and Electronics, Obim managed to set up the computer system. However, he could only use the system for basic functions shown by the seller.

NO PEACE FOR THE WICKED

NO PEACE FOR THE WICKED

(The story of Obim part 17)

The woman, overwhelmed with guilt, started crying, fearing death.

Bystanders pleaded with Obim, but he insisted that the woman must confess her actions to everyone present.

The news spread to the villages of Egwe, and astonishingly, Obim's aunt traveled all the way from Oguta to plead on the woman's behalf.

Obim felt vindicated by God, which was a relief to him.

"I will retract my curse and forgive you on one condition," Obim declared.

"Admit to everyone here whether the money you gave me was counterfeit. Was it fake or not?" Obim pressed her.

"Yes, it's fake. I don't know what overcame me; it was the devil's doing," the woman admitted.

"Keep all the items I gave you and take your money; you won't die. My words have been taken back; you are now free," Obim announced.

This episode reminded Obim of a time a neighbor came to purchase items worth500 Naira and attempted to leave without paying. "Madam, you didn’t pay," Obim remarked.

"I gave you a500 Naira note," the woman insisted.

Wishing to avoid conflict and believing in his own honesty, Obim stated, "Please, Madam, you can go, but I know you haven’t paid me. God is my witness."

The woman, realizing her mistake at home when she found the500 Naira note her husband had left for her, immediately returned to Obim's shop to apologize.

After she explained the situation, Obim accepted the money and was grateful for the divine vindication.

Everyone has unique ways of resolving conflicting situations.

Two wrongs cannot make a right. Life becomes simpler when you find the strategy that works best for you.

EVIL ELDERS

    EVIL ELDERS

The story of Obim (part 16)

During his time managing the shop before returning to school, Obim had an encounter one Saturday morning with a woman dressed in a white gown. She entered the shop and made a small purchase, handing over what appeared to be a1000 note for an item worth850. Obim, suspecting the note to be counterfeit, politely questioned the authenticity of the money and asked if she had another note to provide.

The woman became irate, insisting that the money was genuine and accusing Obim of swapping the note. Fortunately, Obim had no other1000 notes with him except the one given by the woman, which supported his claim.

As the disagreement escalated, Obim suggested that she take her money and make her purchases elsewhere, but she refused to return the items. Realizing the situation had intensified, Obim sought the insight of some elders present in his shop to examine the note.

The elders' response was disheartening, as they appeared indifferent, merely suggesting that Obim could either accept the note or refuse it. This reaction highlighted their unwillingness to stand for the truth, marking them as deceitful.

This incident made it clear why some elders are not held in high regard by the younger generation.

Obim decided to end the dispute by returning the money to the woman.

He then addressed her, saying, "Madam, please take your money and the items. I refuse to engage in a brawl, but I warn you, if you are guilty, you will not survive your journey."

Obim resumed his transactions with other customers while the woman remained in the shop, unable to leave.

When Obim noticed her reluctance, he urged, "Madam, please vacate my shop."

Bound by fear due to Obim's curse, the woman admitted, "I cannot leave because of what you've said."

Fearing for her life, she pleaded, "Please, let me go. I don't want to die."

Obim remained firm, replying, "Madam, I'm not preventing your departure, nor will I retract my curse. If you are guilty, death will come upon you as you cross the road."

Panic-stricken, the woman began to tremble with fear, desperately seeking the elders' intervention to plead with Obim on her behalf.

Follow Your Dreams (The story of Obim part15)

Follow Your Dreams

At Trinity High School Oguta, where Obim completed his secondary education, he made several observations about his teachers. One notable observation was the preferential treatment extended to their favorite students, contrasted by the disdain shown towards those labeled as stubborn students.

A good teacher is often characterized by their ability to transform a challenging student into a well-mannered individual. Unfortunately, Obim fell into the category of students whom some teachers believed would not achieve much in life, let alone pursue higher education.

Obim harbored dreams of achieving significance in the future, even if his path did not include further education. He frequently expressed his desire to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Computer Science.

The future is unpredictable for everyone.

Dreaming is good, striving to achieve those dreams is better, but realizing those dreams is the ultimate goal in life.

During this period of his life, Obim was already assisting his mother with her business alongside his schooling.

Following his secondary education in2008, Obim dedicated himself to his aspiration of becoming successful. By2010, while some of his classmates had begun their tertiary education or were registering for JAMB, Obim also embarked on the journey of registering for JAMB.

The influence of friends can either propel one towards their dreams or pull one away from them. In2010, Obim was admitted into Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, to pursue a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Upon returning to his alma mater to collect his original WAEC and NECO Certificates, Obim chose not to disclose his academic advancements. This decision stemmed from a recognition that many of his former teachers doubted his potential for further education.

THE TALENT OF A YOUNG CHILD (The story of Obim part 14)

THE TALENT OF A YOUNG CHILD

Reflecting on Obim's experiences during his primary school days, it's clear he had a penchant for solitude and creativity. He was deeply engaged in drawing, practical projects such as electrical wiring, and constructing various devices including toy cars, electric irons, and microwave ovens. He was also adept at repairing electronics. His dedication to his dreams was evident, as he often forewent food to see a project through to completion.

One notable project was the construction of a toy car, which necessitated the development of a remote control. Despite the daunting nature of this task for a child, and the challenge of sourcing the right materials, a breakthrough came unexpectedly. After falling asleep while mulling over the remote's mechanism, he dreamt of building it. Upon waking, he was able to construct the remote control with ease.

On another occasion, Obim's father took their malfunctioning TV to a nearby technician, unaware that Obim had already diagnosed the issue but hesitated to fix it for fear of being reprimanded. Observing the technician struggle, Obim offered his assistance. With the TV already disassembled, he fixed it in a mere three minutes, in full view of his astounded father. The technician, impressed by Obim's skill, jokingly called him his master and they shook hands. He also recommended that Obim's father support his talents with higher education to further his skills.

Issues with Student Assessment (The story of Obim part 13)

Issues with Student Assessment

Upon locating Sir Innocent Onyemaize, Obim and Meme nearly received a punishment for attempting to access the staff room while disheveled.

Two girls, already under punishment, were inside the staff room; they left after a conversation with the teacher.

Traditionally, children of teachers were distinguishable by the higher discipline instilled in them, often making them more intelligent and adept in academics.

However, Obim observed that a student's grade frequently depended on their relationship with their teachers rather than merit.

A fellow student, renowned for securing the top rank, was permitted to submit the exam answer sheets to the teacher's office post-examination.

This student was later found in the Biology Lab, altering his answers from those of a classmate who usually ranked second.

To Obim's astonishment, the teacher overlooked this malpractice, favoring the student due to his preferred status.

In a certain primary school in Oguta, a teacher was caught consuming a student's lunch, an act demeaning for educators and detrimental to the child's welfare.

This misconduct likely results in the child receiving preferential grading over their peers.

THE GIRLS WERE ADMIRING US (The story of Obim part 12)

THE GIRLS WERE ADMIRING US

Obim, Chukwuka, Chidum, and Meme were left with no choice but to kneel in front of their peers on the assembly ground.

I recall the time Obim and Meme visited Oguta Girls' High School to meet Meme's father, a teacher at the school. The rules there prohibit students from leaving or bringing in visitors without the security guard's permission at the gate. Fortunately, Obim and Meme received the needed permission and upon entering the school grounds, they immediately caught the attention of the girls outside. Many of them dashed into classrooms to spread the word about the visitors.

Upon reaching the staff room and finding Meme's father absent, Obim and Meme chose to tour the school premises in search of him. During their walk, they passed by some students who were kneeling as a form of punishment, all of whom turned to see the boys.

OLD DAYS AT SCHOOL (The story of Obim part 11)

Old Days at School

Attending school in those days was brimming with enjoyment; we would trek all the way from Egwe to Trinity High School in Oguta.

The school uniform consisted of a shirt and trousers, complemented by a brown belt and sandals.

Our appearance alone was strikingly neat. At that time, Trinity was an all-boys school. Obim, who was previously known as Obiah, had friends who attended the same school and lived in the same neighborhood. Obim's younger brother, Chukwuka, was in the same class due to Obim's experiences at Adimeri Nursery and Primary School.

There were also two brothers, Chidum and Meme, the elder and the younger respectively, who were in the same class with Obim.

All of them had attended Adimeri Nursery and Primary School before Obim's family relocated to Egwe, moving into the same compound as Chidum and Meme.

It was quite the coincidence; upon arriving at the new compound, Chidum and Meme were surprised to see their classmates.

Dressed up for school, Obim, Chukwuka, Chidum, and Meme were fortunate enough to be offered a lift by someone with a car.

Upon their arrival at the school premises, the sight of them drew the attention of the students who were gathered for the morning assembly.

A teacher approached and requested Obim and his friends to kneel down, but it was difficult for the boys, who had arrived in a car, to kneel down and face humiliation before the other students. The man who had given them a lift knelt down, leaving Obim and his friends in an embarrassed state. The teacher exclaimed, "Yes, that's my student; I taught him."

This incident revealed that the man was an alumnus of Trinity High School in Oguta and had been taught by the teacher.

While the man remained kneeling, the boys stood by, witnessing the scene.

The Reality of Life

The Reality of Life

Children's aspirations are often a far cry from the harsh truths of existence.

The journey from dreaming about a future profession to actually embarking on that career path can be fraught with challenges.

·        I want to be a doctor

·        I want to be a nurse

·        I want to be a lawyer

·        I want to be a pilot

·        I want to be an Engineer

·        I want to be the president of  my country

While dreaming big is commendable, the true measure of success lies in actively pursuing those dreams to fruition.

Consider a child who aspires to be a lawyer but does not take their studies seriously, demonstrating a propensity to lie at the slightest provocation.

A secondary school student dreaming of becoming an Engineer yet avoiding Physics and other crucial subjects poses a significant question: How can one fulfill such a dream without conquering the foundational challenges inherent in the field?

It appears that many of the ambitions children label as dreams and visions are merely figments of imagination and illusion.

Interestingly, it is often those with the greatest dreams who find themselves entrenched in poverty.

Spending six years in secondary education, followed by five years in tertiary education, only to consider joining the police force post-graduation due to the stark realities of life underscores a pivotal issue. Options like enrolling in a police academy early on are overlooked, leading some to alter their age to qualify.

Life demands hard work and determination to achieve one's goals, as it doesn’t freely hand out desires and aspirations.

The women seen in the market today once harbored their own dreams. Many wished to change the world, only to have the world shape them into their current roles.

It is worth pondering whether taxi drivers once held dreams of a different future.

Envision a youngster who dreams of presidency indulging in frivolous relationships, mistakenly believing such actions pave the way to success. Unlike Joseph from the Bible who resisted temptation to maintain his integrity, today’s youth often seek such distractions, undermining their own aspirations.

Life's journey becomes easier when we choose the right path and harder when we stray.

The current trend of pursuing quick gains through questionable means without considering the consequences is alarming.

Dreams gradually fade when confronted with the reality that life often delivers the opposite of what one hopes for.

Ultimately, individuals tend to become products of their circumstances rather than the person they once dreamed to become.

A SHOCKING REMINDER

A SHOCKING REMINDER

In the heart of a tumultuous storm, nestled within the walls of my cozy living room, I encountered a jolt that would reverberate through the corridors of my memory and teachings. There I was, sitting by my trusty solar inverter, the lifeline during power outages, my phone plugged in, absorbing power, while I indulged in the casual chatter of an online conversation. The rain beat against the windows, a symphony of nature's unrest, when suddenly, a thunderclap shattered the rhythm, sending a shock through the device and into me. My phone, once a beacon of connection, lay forsaken on the ground, as I grappled with the tangible fear that quaked through my bones.

This moment was not merely a shock to the system but a stark echo of a memory long buried. I was transported back to a time when I stood as a wide-eyed observer, watching my father experience a similar fate. He, too, sat too close to an electric device during a storm, our family's deep freezer his unwitting adversary. With my youngest sibling in his arms, a sudden bolt from the heavens sent a shock through his body, his shout of surprise igniting a pervasive fear that enveloped our home. That incident, while frightening at the moment, had since faded into the tapestry of family lore, a cautionary tale we would half-heartedly chuckle over.

Irony, in its most bitter form, presented itself to me on that stormy day. Here I was, a victim of the very circumstances I had often warned others against. For years, I advocated for the dangers of using electronic devices while charging, especially during a storm. Yet, in a moment of complacency, I found myself ensnared by the very trap I had so diligently flagged for others. This experience served not as a mere shock but as a humbling teacher.

The lessons gleaned from this event extend beyond the immediate physical jolt. They reminded me that no matter how far we may come or how knowledgeable we believe ourselves to be, vulnerability to oversight and accidents remains. My experience, mirrored by my father's years before, stands as a testament to the unpredictable power of nature and our interactions with the technological tools at our disposal. It has reignited within me a passion to educate, to share not just the theoretical warnings but the vivid realities that accompany our lapses in judgment.

With renewed vigor, I have taken this incident as a catalyst for conversation and learning. By sharing my story through articles and discussions, I hope to illuminate the risks of complacency when handling electronic devices, especially during weather disturbances. It is my desire that by exposing my own faults, others may heed the call to exercise caution, safeguarding themselves against the raw might of nature's fury intertwined with technology. In the end, it is through our shared stories and experiences that we can foster a safer and more informed community.

Thus, as the storm cleared and my heart found its steady beat once again, the lesson was clear: experiences, especially those sharp with shock, serve as the most poignant teachers. It is up to us to heed their teachings, share their wisdom, and protect not just ourselves but those within our sphere of influence from becoming another tale of irony.

Analyzing Parental Love

Analyzing Parental Love Through Children's Eyes

The emotional bonds between children and their parents are complex, intricately woven with feelings, actions, and societal norms that dictate and influence these relationships from a very early age. The age-old question of whom a child loves more, their mother or father, does not only stir a pot of emotional debate but also unveils layers of deep-seated beliefs and practices prevalent in our society. This essay seeks to explore these notions, digging into the reasons behind children's evident preference for one parent over the other, and shedding light on the intricate dynamics that govern these relationships.

Why Children May Favor Mothers

Observations and anecdotal evidence suggest that a majority of children express a stronger attachment to their mothers than to their fathers. This phenomenon could be attributed to the traditional role that mothers play in the upbringing of their children. They are often the primary caregivers, the ones most children run to for comfort, nurturing, and immediate needs, especially during their tender years. This maternal presence and availability could be a simple explanation for this preference. Moreover, societal narratives and expectations reinforce this notion, glorifying the mother's role in a child's life while subtly sidelining the father's contributions.

Fathers’ Expression of Love

On the flip side, fathers traditionally express their love in less overt, more pragmatic ways. They are often the unsung heroes whose affections are displayed through actions, sacrifices, and the silent bearing of responsibilities. From working long hours to ensure financial stability to making significant life decisions with their children's best interests at heart, fathers contribute to their children's lives in profound ways. However, these contributions are sometimes overshadowed by the lack of verbal affirmations of love, leading to a perception that mothers are the more loving parents.

Societal Expectations and Their Consequences

The societal construct that men must be the providers has long-term effects on their relationship with their children. Men are conditioned to believe their primary role is to ensure their family's prosperity, often at the cost of personal sacrifices and health. This expectation leads them to prioritize work and financial stability, inadvertently creating a distance with their children. Such dynamics play a crucial role in the latter stages of life when parents need care. The bonds nurtured during early childhood often dictate the proximity of children to their parents in old age, regrettably leaving some fathers feeling isolated.

Reassessing Contributions and Acknowledging Both Parents

To attribute the success of a child's upbringing solely to the mother would be an oversight of the multifaceted roles both parents play. While mothers may provide the emotional and physical nurturing, fathers contribute a framework of stability and security that is equally vital. It's imperative to reassess our perception of parental roles and give due credit to fathers for their silent but significant contributions. Recognizing this balance is essential in fostering a more inclusive appreciation of both parents' roles in a child's life, ensuring that neither is undervalued.

Conclusion

The dichotomy in parental love and children’s perceptions thereof cannot be brushed aside as mere preference. It's a reflection of deeper societal constructs, expectations, and the traditional roles parents play. As we move towards a more balanced understanding of family dynamics, it's crucial to acknowledge and appreciate the unique ways both mothers and fathers contribute to their children’s lives. The essence of parenting lies in the collective efforts of both parents, and recognizing this fact is the first step towards nurturing more wholesome and fulfilling familial relationships.

THE STORY OF OBIM (PART 10)

 Obim's Challenging Period

The class teacher began to fail Obim as a way to punish the young student.

Despite the school headmaster's instructions, Obim was not promoted to the next grade.

For Obim, this was a significant challenge as he was labeled a failing student, despite being one of the smartest in his class.

It has become a practice for some teachers to punish students by failing them in exams, regardless of the students' actual abilities. To excel academically, it seems students must adhere strictly to their teachers' expectations.

According to this logic, a student's intelligence is measured not only by their academic performance but also by their compliance with their teachers.

The animosity between Obim and his teachers persisted.

However, during a practical exercise, Obim's performance was outstanding, showcasing that practical results are undeniable.

After moving to the nearby community of "Egwe," Obim transferred schools, where he completed his primary education.

At Trinity High School in Oguta, the school culture seemed to encourage Obim's previous behavior.

While Obim is naturally quiet, he is valiant in his actions. Often underestimated due to his reserved demeanor, he stands his ground when necessary, refusing to be taken advantage of.

When Auntie Ifeoma punished Obim, she was surprised to hear him utter "odi eshi," a phrase he frequently used during his primary school years.

Sir KC, known for his severe disciplinary methods, took over Obim's punishment, subjecting him to kneel on the school field and imposing strict penalties. Yet, Obim's resolve remained unbroken as he repeated his slogan "odi eshi," leaving the teacher feeling defeated.

Obim was determined to remain stoic in the face of punishment, aiming to show courage rather than succumbing to pain.

No other student showed the same level of endurance to such stringent punishment as Obim did.

Obim excelled in creating inventions such as electric irons, microwave ovens, and toy cars, proving to be the top student in practical assessments.

He was also an exceptional artist, often surpassing his teachers in skill. One instance during a lesson highlighted his talent when students suggested their teacher step aside to let Obim draw instead.

THE STORY OF OBIM (PART 9)

THE INTERVENTION BY THE SCHOOL HEADMASTER.

The young child was led to the headmaster's office, by which time the other students had left, leaving only Obim's relatives who attended the same school waiting on the premises for him.

"I have received numerous reports about your behavior," stated the headmaster. A smile crept across Obim's face as he met the headmaster's gaze.

"Contrary to the punishments meted out by your teachers, who have informed me of your resilience to the cane, I shall opt for a different approach," continued the headmaster.

Obim regarded him with a brimming confidence.

"My decision is to confine you in my office for the night while I depart for home, leaving you as the sole occupant of the school," declared the Headmaster.

In a bold retort, Obim challenged the headmaster to scrutinize his office for anything of value, insinuating that unless the headmaster removed all his possessions from the office, he might return to find them in disarray.

Further asserting his defiance, Obim threatened, "I will create chaos in your office, damaging your books, chair, and table, and I will still find a way to escape."

The headmaster, taken aback by Obim's fearless manner of speaking, decided on the spot to allow him to leave.

With a triumphant air, Obim exited the office, eagerly recounting the ordeal to his waiting relatives.

Reflecting on the situation, the headmaster realized that a more tactful method was necessary to address Obim's behavior.

Unbeknownst to Obim, the Headmaster had plans in store for him that would soon unfold.

THE STORY OF OBIM ...Part 8

On That Fateful Day

Ada, the class prefect, added Obim's name to the list of noise makers, despite him being notably quiet in class that particular day.

UponT her arrival, the class teacher called for the names of the noise makers. Ada presented her list.

Surprisingly, Obim's name topped the list.

Feeling unjustly punished for a misdemeanour he did not commit, Obim was seething with anger.

Despite the teacher's efforts to discipline him through caning, Obim refused to shed tears. Instead, he maintained a smile and confidently said "Odi eshi," a phrase in their local dialect, after each stroke.

Following the teacher's departure, Obim saw an opportunity for retaliation. He confronted Ada with a fierce determination, punishing her for wrongly accusing him.

This incident prompted the school administrators to take a closer look at Obim's behaviour.

Auntie Elizabeth, affectionately known as "Auntie Eliza" by the students, decided to intervene by giving Obim24 more strokes of the cane. Yet, he simply smiled and uttered his signature phrase, "Odi eshi".

During these moments, Obim's resilience earned him admiration from his peers, as they lauded his courage and ability to endure punishment without faltering.

Some students even began to imitate Obim, admiring his capacity to withstand pain.

Obim's reputation reached the ears of the most feared teacher in Adimeri nursery and primary school, Oguta, known for his strict disciplinary methods. It was widely believed that no unruly child could withstand his punishment.

Even after classes had ended, students lingered, curious about Obim's fate. The teacher demanded Obim to kneel and face the wall during their lesson, asserting his authority in front of the class.

After a prolonged wait, with the teacher seemingly indifferent to Obim's punishment as if caning had no effect on him, Obim grew impatient. The teacher, left with no alternative, administered48 strokes of the cane. Yet, instead of crying, Obim smiled and repeated "Odi eshi," much to the teacher's astonishment and the incredulity of all who witnessed it.

THE STORY OF OBIM (PART  7)

School Days

During his time in primary school, Obim had a companion named Chinonso.

Chinonso, who has a fair complexion, is the son of a video bar owner where individuals pay to watch movies.

Their interests differed; Chinonso was into karate, whereas Obim preferred wrestling. Both of them were notably mischievous at "Adimeri Nursery and Primary School Oguta" during their primary school years.

Back then, the school was considered one of Oguta's finest. It attracted parents from nearby communities who brought their children there. I remember some girls from Mgbidi, such as Ada and Chinasa, among others.

These students consistently arrived at school by vehicle.

Obim and Chinonso were known for their rough play during breaks, often insisting that other pupils seek their permission before engaging in the common childhood activity of building sand houses.

The duo's behavior deteriorated over time, showing disrespect towards not only their seniors but also their teachers.

They were notorious for causing disturbances in the classroom, resulting in the class prefect, Ada, frequently listing Obim and his friend as noise makers.

THE STORY OF OBIM (PART 6)

Some days begin with reflections on the past, while others are filled with visions of the future.

Obim resides in a compound situated very close to his workplace. He is a young man known for his quiet demeanor, preferring to keep to himself and abstain from meddling in others' affairs.

No matter how much one tries to steer clear of trouble, there might be those who harbor ill will towards you, even if you haven't wronged them in any way.

Obim's neighbor, who operates a nearby shop, inquired about the availability of a toilet intended for shop use. When Obim informed him there wasn't one, the neighbor further questioned if the toilet in the adjacent apartment could be used for the shops. Obim clarified that it couldn't, as it belonged to the apartment and was for its tenants' use.

Days later, the man stormed into Obim's office, demanding the key to the toilet. Despite Obim's polite clarification that the shops did not have a designated toilet, the man, in frustration, broke into Obim's apartment with a hammer and damaged the external door that also led to the toilet.

The incident left Obim in disbelief, particularly because the man was a pastor and his wife a prophetess; he had not expected such behavior from them.

This event marked the onset of their dispute.

THE STORY OF OBIM (PART 5)

Being truthful often demands considerable sacrifice, as it can lead to offense and critique from others.

A woman approached Obim, requesting his services to design and print a Marriage Certificate for her.

Right from their initial meeting, Obim sensed that the woman was deceitful about the circumstances surrounding the loss of her marriage certificate.

Though producing a new certificate wouldn't pose a challenge for Obim, he is a young man of high integrity.

The woman professed to be a member of a church in Oguta, naming it "The Lord's Freedom Church."

When Obim requested the church's detailed address, she was unable to provide it, offering instead a series of unconvincing excuses. "Madam, please, could you at least provide the church's logo?" he asked, but she declined.

She left only her contact number behind, promising to furnish the requested details later.

After a lapse of four working days, she returned to Obim for the same service.

"Greetings, madam. It's been a while since we last communicated," Obim remarked.

She explained, "Ah yes, a friend suggested I switch to 'Catholic Church' instead of the previously mentioned one."

Obim inquired, "Does the church authority know about this marriage certificate?"

Her inability to provide a clear explanation and retorting, "If you can't do the job, just say so," strongly indicated her intent to forge the document.

Confronted with her evasion, Obim definitively stated, "Madam, perhaps it's best you seek assistance elsewhere, as I wish to avoid any involvement in forgery."

Reflecting on his past experiences in computer-related services, Obim's decision was firmly rooted in honesty.
